AMU: Moving towards global leadership

VPLNEWS, ALIGARH May 16: Besides having been recognized as one of the five top central universities and given category II autonomy by the University Grants Commission, the Aligarh Muslim University has initiated a slew of academic, developmental and student-centric initiatives. The University has got a grant of Rs 30 crores for constructing a new research scholar hostel and 20 crores for College of Nursing. In order to meet the demands of the industry and new initiatives of learning, the University has revised syllabi and curricula in all departments and it intends to start several new sought-after academic programmes including postgraduate courses in Chinese, Spanish, French, Russian and German and courses like M Voc, MDS (Pediatrics). This bears a testimony to the untiring efforts of Professor Tariq Mansoor who took over as the Vice Chancellor of this historical institution a year ago.
Prof Mansoor, who has completed one year in office today, has expressed satisfaction on the progress saying that it has been a “fulfilling year” for the University. He, however, urged the University community that there is no resting on our achievements and “we need to continue the good work as improvement is a continuous and gradual process”.
Prof Mansoor said that the last one year was full of activities ranging from holding of series of national and international seminars, symposia and conferences to bringing of laurels by the faculty in the form of awards and sanction of research projects.
Prof Mansoor pointed out that Sir Syed Bicentenary celebrations and holding of Annual Convocation were the most salient events the University undertook during the last one year.
The M Tech courses in Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology have received accreditation by NBA, whereas the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College of the University has been ranked 9th in NIRF ranking. In its recently released ranking of Emerging Economies University Ranking, the Times Higher Education, UK has placed AMU at 5th place among Indian universities.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College of AMU has received a tremendous fillip as its Cardiology Centre, Assisted Reproductive Technology Unit in the Department of Gynaecology and the District Early Intervention Centre has been made functional while a Low Vision Aid Centre and a Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery project has been initiated at JNMC.
The intake of several courses including PhD, LLM, BALLB, MD (Pathology), MD (Radiotherapy) and undergraduate programmes in Women’s College has been increased.
Prof Mansoor’s special interest has paved the way for the establishment of Institute of Pharmacy, a College of Nursing and a Paramedical College in the University soon.
The University has put premium on placement of students and more than a thousand students of the University have been offered placement through Recrufest and other campus placement drives in which national and international companies like HDFC, Wipro, L&T, Voltas, TCS, Mahindra, Hero Motors, Tata Steel visited the University.
An institution’s standing is also gauged through its reach among students on global scale. The AMU has signed memoranda of understanding with world-class universities and institutes of higher learning including the Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, University Islam Sultan Sharif Ali Brunei, International Islamic University Malaysia and Massachusetts General Hospital, Somerville, USA.
In order to transform itself into a Green campus, AMU has also made notable advances in energy conservation and generation of solar power, while at the same time playing an active role in Namami Ganga Mission Project of the Government of India.
In addition to this, various departments and centres of the University have received extension in their different programmes including DRS, CAS and DST projects, supported by the UGC.
On infrastructure development front, the University has augmented a number of construction, renovation and expansion projects including Women’s College Auditorium, new academic block at Faculty of Law, expansion of University Guest House, construction of new residential blocks, air conditioning of JNMC library, renovation of Dialysis Unit and inclusion of five new horses in the Riding Club. Sixty-eight classrooms have been transformed into Smart Classrooms while the seating capacity has been increased in the PG Hall of Maulana Azad Library and construction of a new Examination Centre in JNMC is underway.
To strengthen and upgrade its school education system, the University has undertaken extensive construction and maintenance activities. The construction of a new primary section of AMU ABK School (Boys), construction of three new classrooms and renovation of old ones in Abdullah School, construction of Chemistry Lab and extension work at the Sayyid Hamid Senior Secondary School, construction of administrative block, meeting hall and computer lab in Senior Secondary School (Girls) and renovation work at AMU City Girls’ High School are in progress.
On ICT development front, AMU has undertaken a massive LAN upgradation project while at the same time 400 new computer units with Core i5 and i7 enabled processors have been included.
The progress of a University is also measured through the achievements of its students and faculty members. The University Drama Club and the Debating and Literary club teams won the National Championship at the 33rd All India Inter University National Youth Festival held at Ranchi and North Zone Championship at Ambala. Besides this, a number of literary and cultural programmes including Filmsaaz, Ensemble, Innovatia and Art Niche were organized by the different clubs of the Cultural Education centre.
In sports, the AMU Roller Skating Junior Hockey Team won 55th National Roller Skating Championship at Kurukshetra, while its Roller Skating Hockey Team won championship as 2nd runner up in the All India Intervarsity Roller Hockey Evant at Chandigarh.
AMU students have also made their presence noticed at the innovation, entrepreneurship and incubation events such as ROBOCON, AUV Challenge, Festival of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Rashtrapati Bhawan and Formula Racing Car event at Coimbatore and won prizes for their innovative projects.
